Iceland suspends talks on joining EU

Η Ισλανδία ανέστειλε τη διαδικασία ένταξής της στην ΕΕ

Iceland has suspended talks on joining the European Union ahead of its parliamentary election on April 27th. According to the local mass media, the government’s decision has been prompted by the fact that the so-called Eurosceptics may come to power in Iceland as a result of the election.

According to sociological polls, the current left-of-centre coalition Cabinet is 15% behind the conservative Iceland Independence Party in popularity rating.

Iceland applied for EU membership in 2010 after the country’s major banks had gone bankrupt due to huge debts and because the economic situation had drastically worsened.
