The political problems for Germany’s Angela Merkel just seem to keep getting worse. Now the chancellor’s own cabinet appears to be in open revolt. Transport minister Alexander Dobrindt cut loose in an interview with his local paper, calling for a Plan B of border closures and telling Merkel: “a friendly face is not enough”.
Reuters has helpfully provided an account in English. Things are so bad that the country’s top-selling Bild tabloid is now tracking “Who is still on Team Merkel”. Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Commission president, is still one backer, apparently. Bild has also published a new poll from Insa showing Ms Merkel’s Christian Democrats now down to just 32.5 per cent support, or 9 points below their level in the 2013 federal elections. The anti-Muslim Alternative fur Deutschland party is at an all-time high of 12.5 per cent. Alistair MacDonald, Reuters’ Brussels bureau chief, and his colleague take in all the latest German developments and ask: is this how Europe ends?
