Brief on Denmark’s law to seize money and valuables from refugees.

Belgian MEP, and former Belgian foreign minister Louis Michel raged: “sham debate”…“This is probably the most outrageous example of dishonour for the European Parliament,”.

There may have been three hours of debate in the Danish parliament, but the result was never in doubt: the government got its new, tough immigration law approves, including a measure allowing authorities to seize valuables brought to Denmark by refugees in order to fund their stay.
The Danish daily Politiken reported that the asset seizure provision caused the most contentious debate, but the package still passed 81-27. One piece of detritus that emerged from Tuesday’s European Parliament debate over the measure is this video of Belgian MEP, and former Belgian foreign minister Louis Michel, raging against a “sham debate”, aimed at silencing any divergent views within the EU. “This is probably the most outrageous example of dishonour for the European Parliament,” he raged.
